To me, this photograph is reminiscent of an Albert Bierstadt painting. :)

Who is he?

Albert Bierstadt (January 7, 1830 – February 18, 1902) was a German-American painter best known for his lush, sweeping landscapes of the American West. In obtaining the subject matter for these works, Bierstadt joined several journeys of the Westward Expansion. Though not the first artist to record these sites, Bierstadt was the foremost painter of these scenes for the remainder of the 19th century.

Bierstadt was part of the Hudson River School, not an institution but rather an informal group of like-minded painters. The Hudson River School style involved carefully detailed paintings with romantic, almost glowing lighting, sometimes called luminism. An important interpreter of the western landscape, Bierstadt, along with Thomas Moran, is also grouped with the Rocky Mountain School.

This is pretty surreal. Cool contrast! Well the difference between this and Bierstadt, is that Bierstadt added a ridiculous amount of detail to his paintings ;)

Thank you for the compliment!! :D

I just love Bierstadt and his contemporaries, like Frank Church, and others from the Hudson River School.
I wonder how long it took him to complete a canvas? How long have you been painting, Megan? Were you formally trained?
Or is it an innate talent?

Here is a wiki article on Luminism and Bierstadt. [link] and [link](American_art_style)

I studied Bierstadt, Church, Moran, and JMW Turner in a course in college. There's a wonderful book called the American Sublime, from which I did several studies. [link] [link] ... and one of Turner: [link] I have to say that was actually a turning point in my art, a breakthrough in my digital painting abilities. Of course I've been trying to gradually improve, but I always like the dramatic lighting and contrast, grandiose vistas and magnificent landforms/cloudforms.

I suppose my artistic abilities are a mix of formal training, informal training, and talent. I've been drawing since I was 2 years old, taking art lessons at various points along the way. (I know almost everyone draws at that point, but I never gave it up ;) .) I am not one who believes much in innate talent, but I am the daughter of an artist and an engineer, and I ended up being a computer artist, so maybe there's something to that.
